Isolation Transformer

Isolation Transformer
Contrary to the conventional kind of transformers the Isolation Transformer has nothing to do with increasing or decreasing the input voltage level. It performs a totally different kind of operation. An isolation transformer acts as a decoupling device. Its symmetrical windings are used to decouple or disconnect two circuits.
An isolation transformer takes alternate current (AC) from one device and fed it into another device without electrically connecting these circuits. These transformers block the transmission of direct current (DC) signals, but allow AC signals to pass from one circuit to another. Isolation transformers also block interference produced by ground loops.

Features of Isolation Transformer
Following are some relevant features of isolation transformers:
  • Works as a circuit breaker.
  • Reduces noise that can come from the power line.
  • Act as a spike suppressor.
  • Can transfer power from one circuit to another without the use of interconnecting conductors.
  • Mainly used to supply power to sensitive equipments like computers.
  • Ground loop controller and eliminator.
Uses & Applications
Isolation transformers are widely used in electrical installations. Some of its common applications include:
  • Battery chargers
  • Instrumentation
  • Communications
  • Medical application
  • Power supplies
  • Electronics testing
  • Laboratory instruments
  • Computers
  • Custom application
  • Troubleshooting & servicing
