Isolation Transformer

Isolation Transformer
An isolation transformer is a transformer, which is used to disconnect two circuits. They are sometimes provided with symmetrical windings. An isolation transformer does not raise or lower a voltage; that is, whatever voltage comes in is equal to what goes out. These transformers prevent current from flowing directly from one side to the other. As a result they serve as a safety device to prevent electrocution. They also act as a safety device in electronics testing. Isolation transformers with electrostatic shields are used for power supplies for sensitive equipment such as computers or laboratory instruments.

Working Principle
Isolation transformers enable an AC signal or power to be taken from one device and pass into another without electrically connecting the two circuits. The device operates by shielding or blocking transmission of DC signals from one circuit to the other, but allowing AC signals to pass. Isolation transformers also block interference produced by ground loops.

Uses & Applications
Isolation transformers are widely used in electrical installations. Some of its common applications include:
  • Battery chargers
  • Instrumentation
  • Communications
  • Medical application
  • Power supplies
  • Electronics testing
  • Laboratory instruments
  • Computers
  • Custom application
  • Troubleshooting & servicing
