A transformer is a electrical
device that is meant to transfers energy from one AC system to
another. Using magnetic induction, It changes voltage from one level
to another. It transforms the low voltage to high voltage and low
currents. This reduces the current loss and is fit for using at safe
voltages.
Transformers come in various size and shapes and in different
configuration and are used for various industrial and non industrial
applications. There are several special purpose transformers that
meet specific requirement. These transformers are available in
various voltage capacities and have many usage.
Dry high power transformers are important special purpose
transformers which are frequently used both for industrial and
indoor purpose. They are available in various voltage, size and
insulation system. These type of transformers require minimum
maintenance and provide long years of trouble-free service. They
have high impulse strength insulation systems due to which they can
coordinate with all electrical system designs. The sound level is
very low, making the Spang transformer desirable for indoor
applications in commercial buildings.
Other special purpose transformer is three-phase transformer which
is usually constructed by winding three single-phase transformers or
a single three-phase transformer. This transformer is used to step
voltages up or down. When a set of single-phase transformer is used
to transform three phases, it is called as a three-phase bank of
transformers. The working principle of Three-Phase transformer is
that is should have 3 coils or windings which are connected in a
proper range to match the incoming supply of power. This transforms
the voltage supplied by the power company to the level of voltage to
maintain the proper phasing or polarity. These transformers are used
in variety of applications like power distribution, computers, naval
ships, electrical utility transmissions etc.
For various heating applications, furnace transformer is extensively
used. Common application of this transformer includes stepping down
simple line frequency voltage, matching heating element
requirements, induction heating applications, controlling output
voltages and/or currents.
Specialty Transformers are those special purpose transformers which
are manufactured for the electrical industry to meet the needs of
the consumer. They are used in applications such as series street
and highway lighting, military installations, institutional and
perimeter lighting.
There are various other special purpose transformers like isolation
transformer, auto transformer, distribution transformers, small
purpose transformers that meets specific industrial applications.
