Voltage transformer is an
electrical device which is mainly used to measure voltage in
electrical circuits. Its main role is to convert the input voltage
from one level to another, usually from higher to lower. Sometimes
people get confused between voltage transformer and voltage
converter. Let us make it very clear that both of these equipments
are almost same in scope except that, voltage transformers are used
on a much larger scale. As we know that voltage is not constant
through out the world. In some countries the ideal voltage is 110
volts while others use 220 or 240 volts. At times this can create
problem, for example, in case of goods purchased from abroad or
while travelling. The voltage transformer is the solution to this
problem. It converts the input voltage to suit the need of the
equipment.
Types of Transformers
- Step Down Voltage Transformers: These voltage
transformers are used in countries and regions with voltage
supply of 220/240 volts. They take this voltage as input and
step it down to 110/120 volts, hence the name step down voltage
transformer.
- Step Up Voltage Transformers: These voltage
transformers are used in countries and regions with voltage
supply of 110/120 volts. They take this voltage as input and
step it up to 220/240 volts, hence the name step up voltage
transformer.
There are various other types of transformers used in
different applications. Some of them are:
